Could It Get Any Better Than This

Posted in Target at 6:30 pm by calluna

I finally got around to reading the insert that came with my Target Clipless Coupon and what did I find? The new Target Checkcard. How tempting is this: a card that debits directly from my checking account and still earns me Target Rewards like my Target Visa. Since I use my debit card at Target anyway I might as well sign up for this to get the Reward points. If you’re not familiar with Target’s Reward points, for every $1,000 you spend on your Target Visa you get a coupon for 10% off your entire purchase. Sign me up!

A Few Hours Too Late

target_dog-tm.jpgI was happy to see Target’s latest Clipless Coupon in my mailbox yesterday when I got home, but disappointed that three of the products on the card I had just purchased on my way home. I could have saved $2.75!! Fortunately for me, I shop for groceries at Target so frequently that I’m sure I’ll have occasion to use the card again before it expires in December.

Mission Accomplished

Posted in Current Events at 5:03 pm by calluna

I survived my reunion. Parts of it were actually kinda fun. Parts of it were exactly like expected, like getting in a time machine back to 1997. The most popular guy in class who got along with everyone regardless of cool or nerd was the most popular guy at the reunion. The pretty girls were still pretty. The “bad boys” were still bad.

So all of this makes me wonder, am I the same person? I went into this thinking that I’ve changed and matured and become a different person over the last 10 years, but seeing how everyone else stayed the same makes me second-guess that. I think too that being reunited with your past can make you become the person you used to be or at least express different personality traits. And how much can you really assess about people in just a few hours? I’m sure we were all nervous about seeing people we hadn’t seen in so long so our best defense was to be who we were, because what if they don’t like who we’ve become?

Overall, glad I went. Also glad it’s over so I can get back to being me again.

Going, Going, Gone

Posted in Current Events at 1:40 pm by calluna

So the reunion is this weekend. For those of you who don’t keep up with this blog, I’m talking about my ten-year high school reunion. It turns out I will be going to two of three events: a lunch where everyone can meet each other’s kids and a dinner for adults only. I’m mildly excited, mostly nervous and partly dreading it, all at the same time.

I think it will be fun to see everyone and hear about what they’ve done, meet their wives/husbands and kids, etc. But how long can all of that take? Five or ten minutes? OK, maybe 30? (There were only 19 people in my graduating class.) So what do we do the other hour and a half? And that’s just the lunch. I will see these people again 4 hours later for dinner, and what do we talk about then?

What tends to happen to me in these situations, where I spend chunks of time with people from my past, is we reminisce because that’s all we have in common: the past. But maybe that’s what reunions are all about: Reminiscing the good ol’ days, even if they weren’t all that good. And reuniting with those you’ve lost touch with … and will lose touch with again after reunion weekend. That is until 10 more years roll around and you do it all again.

“Phoood,” Literally

Posted in Blogroll at 9:51 am by calluna

A couple new blog roll items that are worth checking out:

Phoood – A web site about food, basically reviews of new items both in stores and fast food. I love new items!

Literally, A Web Log — a blog about the misuse of the word “literally”

And last but not least, The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks — another grammar blog

Check ‘em out! Let me know what you think.

And remember, by blog roll is for you as much as it is for me. If it’s on my blogroll you can bet that I go there regularly if not daily.

Cheerios Snack Mix

Posted in Try New Things at 8:25 am by calluna

A while back I wrote about trail mixes and combining Cheerios, among other things, into snack mixes for my boys. Now Cheerios has their own snack mix. It’s very similar to Chex Mix with pretzels, Chex and, of course, Cheerios.

I expected it to be kinda sweet and to serve as a breakfast item but it’s actually salty/seasoned like traditional snack mixes. My 4-year-old, though, loves it (for breakfast and for after school snack). My 2-year-old, I’m sad to say, can’t have it due to his peanut allergy. I can’t pinpoint exactly what item in the snack mix has peanuts or peanut products but the label warns: “Contains wheat, milk, soy, almond and peanut products.”

Transformers Coming to a DVD Near You

Posted in Home Life at 7:45 am by calluna

I was updating the queue in Netflix this weekend, and, being the nice wife that I am, I asked my hubby if he had any movies he’d like to add. As he was thinking, I told him I’d already added Transformers, which comes out Oct. 16.

He really wanted to see this one in theaters and we didn’t get to because the childcare I arranged fell through and somehow this is all my fault. So to redeem myself I was proactive in making sure we could watch it on DVD as soon as possible after it came out.

He nonchalantly says: “No need to get it on Netflix.”

“Why?” I say, in a semi-defensive tone. “Do you not want to see it anymore just because we couldn’t see it the theater?”

“No,” he says, very matter-of-fact. “I just plan to buy it on DVD the day it comes out.”

There you go. ‘Nuff said.

To Be or Not To Be

Posted in My Kids at 8:51 pm by calluna

It’s October which means Halloween which means Halloween costumes. Every year (until this one) I’ve chosen my oldest son’s Halloween costume without asking his opinion. Actually my mother-in-law and sister chose and bought his costumes, with my consent.

Cute but cheap are the two criteria. His first Halloween he wore a black cat costume that my sister bought new for $1 at a yard sale. The following year he wore a clown costume my mother-in-law bought the year before on clearance. And last year he was Buzz Lightyear — complete with inflatable wings. Now this one my sister paid full price for ($30 I think, plus the wings) but she bought it for him for his birthday earlier in the year and he wore it several times playing dress-up.

But this year he has wants. I had the grand idea that he could be Woody and we could modify the Buzz Lightyear he wore last year to fit my younger son. And he seemed OK with that until we first looked at costumes at Target few weeks ago. He wanted to be a Power Ranger, which I don’t approve of, so I tried to redirect with “Let’s find the Woody costumes.” Turns out Target doesn’t have Woody this year.

Now, after two more trips to the Target costume department and one trip to Party City, he still wants to be a Power Ranger (which I still disapprove of) and he also wants to be Shrek or Batman. My husband is in favor of either of those but he doesn’t want to buy the costumes. He just wants to get a mask and if he goes as Shrek let him wear this t-shirt that says “I am Shrek” or if he goes as Batman let him wear his Batman pajamas with a $3 Batman mask from Party City. I’d prefer he not wear a mask so I proposed we get a Shrek headband and then paint his hair and face green. And Woody is still an option. Party City has the Woody accessory kit (vest, hat, bandana and sheriff’s badge) for $15.

I’m just not “sold” on any of our ideas. I agree with my husband that he’s only going to wear the costume once so it’s not worth spending a lot of money on but at the same time if I’m going to invest time, energy and money in this I want his costume to be cute enough for a picture. So we’re undecided on what to be … or not to be.
