Happy Leap Day!

Posted in Current Events tagged , , at 11:22 am by calluna

I forgot today was “Leap Day” until I received an email, from the university where I am a student, stating that they are having a Leap Year sale today only. That got me wondering if other places were having Leap Day specials and to this New York Times article about some of the special offerings available today, 2008’s “extra” day. Most of them are for people born on Feb. 29, but hey, those guys deserve a break so I’m all for that. Some companies are sharing the love with the rest of us too. Papa John’s Pizza, for example, is giving free pizza to those with Feb. 29 birthdays, and the rest of us can have a Leap Day Party with 3, 3-topping pizzas for $29.29.

Some are comparing Feb. 29 to last year’s 7-7-7 day (July 7, 2007) where all kinds of special deals were offered and people were getting married left and right. There’s a similar phenomenon going on with Feb. 29, although that one doesn’t make as much sense to me.

My homage to Leap Day is that Feb. 29 is now highlighted in my blog calendar since it will be four more years before I could blog on this day again. Happy Leap Day!

Who Taught the Sun?

When I see articles like this about the sun exploding or the Earth being swallowed up by the sun, I am so comforted by the words like the ones in this Nicole C. Mullen song.

Road Rage

Posted in Random at 11:21 am by calluna

I am such a candidate for road rage. One of my biggest driving pet-peeves happened to me this morning on the way to work. There was a long line of traffic in the right lane, all cars wanting to turn right onto the “big road,” as my boys call it. And lo and behold cars come speeding up the left lane and then at the front of the turning lane flip on their blinker and want over. No! They should have got in line way back there just like I did. It’s cutting in line. You don’t do that in line at a restaurant or theme park; don’t do it when driving.

We’re all in a hurry, but what happens (as did this morning) is that the people sitting there with their blinker on, begging for some nice person — who by the way did the right thing and waited in line — to let them in, blocks the left lane. Now people wanting to go straight or turn left are braking for this person and swerving into the turn lane to avoid an accident.

I don’t let them in. I am a very nice driver, and if I see someone who needs to merge I like to help them out because we’ve all been there and I like for people to help me out when I’m in that situation. But when you’re trying to cut in line? I don’t think so. I break one of my other driving pet-peeves (tail-gating) to stay as close as possible to the person in front of me so there is no room for you to try to break in. And then, of course, that driver throws their hands up at me, mouths a cuss word and gives me the finger, like I did something wrong.

Told ya. I can sooooo feel the road rage when that happens.

Monopoly World Edition

Monopoly is coming out with a World Edition and you can vote on their web site for which world cities should be included on the board. There’s only like six days left to vote (last day is Feb. 28) so check out the web site and vote for your favorite world cities.

You can also print monopoly money from the same site. How cool is that?

The Flu

Posted in Current Events, Home Life tagged , , , at 9:55 pm by calluna

Despite all four members of my little family getting some form of the flu vaccine, the flu has made its way into my home. Hubby started feeling bad Wednesday and went downhill fast. We got him into the doctor today, and the flu test was positive.

Our doctor gave us both a Rx for Tamiflu — hubby’s to make him feel better quicker and mine to keep me from getting it. I’m supposed to call the boys’ doctor tomorrow to see if he wants to do anything precautionary for them too.

So just how did we get the flu if we did what the doctors and the CDC recommend and got our vaccines? Because it looks like the strains of flu we were vaccinated with are not the same strains that are now making everyone sick. Supposedly any flu shot is better than none at all and can weaken the virus even if it’s not the same strain. Just a little disheartening to go through the expense and hassle of getting vaccinated and still get sick.

My Global Bazaar Favs

Posted in Target at 2:15 pm by calluna

Just got around to browsing the Global Bazaar selection online. Most of the things I like are in the “bronze” collection which make sense since the decor in my home is a lot of wood and brown tones. We like to call it “warm.” I like this Writing Table, for example.

Very cool. I’ve been wanting to get a table of my own to do my school work, scrapbooking, or whatever else I may want to do. This one is cool but at $299 certainly out of my price range. In fact it is among the highest priced items in the bronze collection. It figures that I’d like the most expensive thing.

Some other favorites, although not all of them would go in my home.

The good news is, I’ve waited so long to give my Global Bazaar review that most of it is now 20-30 % off. Happy Global Bazaaring!

Happy February

Posted in Home Life tagged , , , , at 10:49 pm by calluna

I just noticed I haven’t blogged at all in February. We’re 14 days in and I’ve not had anything to say! Not true. I haven’t had time to say anything because I’m too busy doing the things that someday I’ll have time to write about it.

Seriously, we are swamped. I really shouldn’t be writing now but the February calendar on my homepage looked so sad. There’s no one thing that’s keeping me away but really just a lot of school stuff (for both me and Hubby), personal stuff like trying to recover from the backup of laundry after my trip to Houston and making strawberry rice krispy treats for the boys’ Valentine’s Day parties, and getting over a sinus infection.

Work has been interesting too, because we keep getting more and more writing assignments and just can’t seem to get ahead. Some of it’s totally my fault. I haven’t truly recovered from the holidays, and by that I mean having so much time off at one time followed by several smaller government holidays, then going out of town and then having several meetings and extra tasks telling people what we did while we were out of town. My work to-do list is so long I feel like I’m doggy-peddling to keep my head above water. Not to mention that the bosses have noticed and inquired, “Uh, what exactly are you guys doing over there?” That’s one area I’ve always taken pride in, which is doing my work on time and often ahead of schedule. The fact that we have no set “schedule” but there’s some built-in yet un-stated expectations makes that part harder than other places I’ve worked.

My school research project is in full swing has occupied some of my thoughts and time, too. And while similar to the course I took last semester, this one does require a separate research project due in less than two weeks, I think, which I haven’t started. As I said, I probably shouldn’t be writing now. At least the calendar now shows something for February. I’ll try to do better. I didn’t even get to tell you about the new car…. Maybe next time.

Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day!
