Earth Day Musings
In honor of Earth Day I thought I’d write a “green” post.
I don’t consider myself to be a big Mother Earth, recycle, “green” person. However, I have to admit that lately I’ve been more interested in the green movement, perhaps a little selfishly though. Some of the “green” products that are out there are so cool, as are the things people are making out of recycled products. Today, for example, at the Earth Day event where I work they gave away free stuff like jar openers made of recycled tires and served soft drinks in cups made out of corn (the corn is made into a thin, flimsy plastic).
A few weeks ago I was impressed at the number of bottled waters saved when The Biggest Loser switched the whole show (cast, filming crew, everyone) to reusable water bottles and Brita water filters. I’m all into the reusable grocery bags now and bought two at my Publix store this weekend and received two free ones at the Earth Day event today. I started using Method all-natural cleaning products a few months ago and have been very happy with their cleaning power and love the scent of the Eucalyptus Mint Tub ‘N Tile cleaner. (Method is available at Target, btw).
I’ve recycled newspapers, plastic bottles and aluminum cans for several years now, too, but again for a little bit of a selfish reason. The large juice containers and milk jugs take up a lot of room in the trash can so by recycling them I have to take the trash out left often. But, hey, whatever gets it done right? And every little bit helps.
I have to give the folks at NASA kudos too for making the Earth icon on their web site a cool glowing green for Earth Day. Happy Earth Day!

Strawberry Shortcake Pop-A-Points

Update: My co-worker was nice enough to take a picture of the Strawberry Shortcake pencils with his iPhone. Thanks David!
If you’re planning a dinosaur birthday party or a Strawberry Shortcake birthday hit the Target One Spot (the cheap section with all the $1 goodies at the front of the store) for party favors. On a recent trip I saw dinosaur stickers, Strawberry Shortcake hair accessories and Strawberry Shortcake “pop-a-point” pencils (you know, those 1980s-ish pencils with the push-up leads) and other things like that which would be perfect for goodie bags. I was really into Strawberry Shortcake as a little girl and picked up a pack of the Strawberry Shortcake pop-up pencils just for the nostalgia.

Update: Target Retote
Here’s some pics of my Target recycling project and a pic of the Target Fortune cover from last month. I was only able to fit 17 bags in the small pouch. I hope that’s enough to make my retote!

Postage hike (again)
The postage rates are going up again in about a month, May 12 to be exact. Why am I telling you this, you might ask? So you can go buy Forever stamps now and gloat with me on May 13 about having only paid 41 cents to mail a letter when everyone else is paying 42!

Target Retote
I’m a sucker for all things branded in the Target logo and almost couldn’t resist buying the “Target retote” yesterday. It’s a good-size tote bag made out of recycled Target bags — yeah the white bags with the red bullseyes on them all matted together and turned into a tote bag. How cool is that???

But remember I said almost couldn’t resist. I didn’t buy the bag because a better offer presented itself. Instead, I bought the April 14 issue of Newsweek magazine which was part of the retote display. The gimmick is this: buy Newsweek magazine, take the cover off and make it into a mailing pouch (directions are included), stuff your used Target bags inside, and mail them (postage paid) to TerraCycle, a recycling company that has partnered with Target to turn the bags into totes. In return, you get a coupon in the mail for a free retote!! I can’t wait to make my Target mailer and fold up all my little Target bags to recycle. Sounds like fun, it will help the environment by not having the bags end up in the trash, and I get the tote for free. It’s a win-win.

Today Show Ramblings
I’m behind on my news and just heard today that Kathie Lee Gifford is joining the Today show. I have to admit my immediate reaction was “What?!?
As a former Today show loyal, I don’t know if Kathie Lee “fits,” although the Today show has changed quite a bit since Katie left so maybe she fits the new Today. Katie was one of the main reasons I watched the Today show (and also the reason I now watch CBS news if I’m home in time to catch the national news). I like Meredith Viera OK, but I loved Katie.
Kathie Lee is going to be co-hosting the Today show’s fourth hour. I was at home a few weeks ago on the day Today expanded to four hours, and I kind of questioned that too. I remember when they went to three hours, how it seemed that last hour was so much fluff. Katie and Matt were usually off the air by then and the show was left to Ann, Al, and the weekend hosts or correspondents.
The fourth hour’s I’ve seen have been along the same lines: a lot of magazine editors giving tips on this and that, a lot of product promotion and some elaboration or rehashing of stories aired during the first two hours (in case you missed it). According to a March 8 New York Times article:
“NBC has struggled to find an audience for the fourth hour of ‘Today,’ which emphasizes softer subjects like fashion and shopping. Its viewership lags far behind that of ‘The View’ and ‘The Price Is Right’ in Los Angeles, for example, and trails ‘Rachael Ray’ in New York City, according to Nielsen Media Research.”
Maybe Kathie Lee can save the fourth hour. We’ll see. She starts next week.
