American Honey

Many, many songs have pieces of lyrics I relate to, some more than others, but it’s been a long while since I’ve connected to a song that the whole thing was just me, to a tee. Ah, how I love Lady Antebellum’s American Honey. Every line speaks to me, about me, through me. I can’t really explain it. I grew up in the country. Those were good times. Life is so busy now. I sometimes miss that country girl who lived life a little slower, who rode her bike to the country store, who tanned while driving her daddy’s John Deere, who rolled down the windows while riding down two-lane roads, letting the wind blow her hair, and the stereo blaring, who in those moments just was. Life, simple and sweet. I could listen to this song over and over, and some days I do.

She grew up on a side of the road
Where the church bells ring and strong love grows
She grew up good
She grew up slow
Like American honey

Steady as a preacher
Free as a weed
Couldn’t wait to get goin’
But wasn’t quite ready to leave
So innocent, pure and sweet
American honey

There’s a wild, wild whisper
Blowin’ in the wind

Callin’ out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothing’s sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Get caught in the race
Of this crazy life
Tryin’ to be everything can make you lose your mind
I just wanna go back in time
To American honey, yea

There’s a wild, wild whisper
Blowin’ in the wind
Callin’ out my name like a long lost friend
Oh I miss those days as the years go by
Oh nothing’s sweeter than summertime
And American honey

Gone for so long now
I gotta get back to her somehow
To American honey
