“I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3
Wouldn’t it be great if God worked like a Magic 8 Ball? You know, ask a yes or no question, shake up the ball and voila!, just like that, there’s your answer. Wouldn’t things be so much easier if answers from God were that instantaneous and clear?
I think we sometimes try to use the Bible like it’s a Magic 8 Ball. When we need an answer about something big going on in our life — should I take this job, should we make this move, should we have another baby, etc. — we’ll open our Bibles, start reading wherever it falls, and expect to find our answer there.
For some, that’s the only time they turn to Scripture — when they need something. It’s difficult to discern what Scripture is actually saying if you only read it occasionally.
Think about what you do if you ask the Magic 8 Ball a question but you don’t like the answer. You just shake it again … and again and again until you get the answer you want, right?
Don’t we sometimes do that with God too? I heard in a message not that long ago that, most often, when we pray and ask God to tell us something, we’ve already made up our minds about what we’re going to do. We just want God to bless what it is we’ve already decided to do.
