The Invention of Sleep

Often it just feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to do everything I have to do and still have time to all the things I want to do too. I’ve gone to bed thinking that I wish God didn’t require grownups to sleep. That maybe when you get a certain age you don’t have to sleep anymore so you have all the time in the world to do everything.

But that’s an awful thing to wish God had done. He, afterall, is the inventor of sleep. It was his idea, and all things he created are good.

Genesis 2:2: “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested.”

He created our physical bodies to need rest. Not only do they need it, they work best when they’ve had it. Our minds are sharper, our moods better, our bodies recovered from moving all day long. Sleep is precious and a blessing and a gift.
